The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd

Date: Saturday, January 10;  3:00 - 5:00 PM

I have wanted to read this novel with others for a long time so I am excited to share that our next book is by one of my favorite authors, Sue Monk Kidd. Ok - I have several favorite authors but that is beside the point.

The Invention of Wings is historical fiction set primarily in Charleston, South Carolina during the 1800s. We follow the lives of Sarah and Hetty (a.k.a. Handful) who come from very different backgrounds. Before diving into this powerful novel, consider reflecting upon the following questions:

  1. How might a person's sense of identity be shaped or challenged by the environment and expectations in which they grow up?
  2. How might a true friendship offer both comfort and challenge when friends come from very different backgrounds, such as in terms of social class or race?
  3. How do family relationships and parental guidance influence a person's beliefs and actions over time?
  4. What does true friendship mean when two people come from very different backgrounds or social positions?
  5. Can friendship ever feel like a burden or a responsibility? How might that shape the relationship over time?
