The Elements

The Elements by John Boyne

In The Elements, acclaimed Irish novelist John Boyne has created an epic saga that weaves together four interconnected narratives, each representing a different perspective on the enabler, the accomplice, the perpetrator, and the victim.

Our conversation was deep, powerful, and respectful. I love this group for many reasons but especially for the save space we all maintain with each other when discussions become challenging and personal. Collective reading is a wonderful way to connect with others!

Below you will find our discussion document, some snaps of our session together, and information about our version of Irish nachos!

Nacho Normal Nachos

Welcome to Ireland (as well as Australia, and England)

Sometimes a food connection is not obvious, so, we make our own. We can do that, it is our Book & Bake Club! With multiple settings (Ireland, Australia, and England) we decided upon our own version of Irish nachos, and, before folks release the hounds on me, I know that a ruben sandwich is not Irish, so calm yourselves, friends. We know. We wanted something with some Irish ingredients and that we can create together. This creation fit the bill - and wow, it was so tasty!

Our irish-ish nachos

Have an open mind, my friends...

If you are grumbling about how some of the ingredients here are not Irish, read the above paragraph again. (*wink*). Here is the scoop...

Shred the cheeses. If you must purchase pre-shredded, I won't judge (since I am asking you to refrain from judgement over our "Irish-ish" nachos), but know you're getting more than just cheese when you purchase pre-shredded.

Bake the waffle fries as directed.  Optional, but I prepped the deli corned beef ahead...however, when I do this again, I will skip it since it is going to go back into the oven once the fixins' are layered on top.

I positioned the cooked waffle fries in the center of my kitchen island and placed the other ingredients all around. Together, we built our Irish-ish nachos by layers and back into the oven they went to get all melty with crispy edges.  Fully Irish or not, these were delicious!

Ingredient List

Frozen waffle fries

Corned beef (from the deli)

Swiss cheese (block)

Fontina (block)

Kraut, drained (Irish eat lots of cabbage!)

Thousand Island Dressing
