Our session was great! The book, The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune, was definitely a shift from what we've read in the past. I find this novel refreshing!
For readers ready for more adventures from the island of Marsyas, you're in luck. The sequel, Somewhere Beyond the Sea is available from your local library!
You'll find our discussion document below. Keep scrolling because you won't want to miss out on our recipe and photos from our fun time together!
Remember when Arthur and Linus took the children to the ice cream parlor? That was inspiration for our recipe. We made a no churn, two ingredient ice cream that put smiles on our faces indeed. Once our base was made, everyone channeled their inner child and added their own mix-ins. Speaking of mix-in....our mix-in options were inspired by the amazing characters in the novel.
Once again, I turned to a tried and true source: Gemma Stafford's Bigger Bolder Baking website. Her recipe for two ingredient ice cream is legendary and I was thrilled to share it!
It wasn't too challenging to connect to our novel. There were many options. Think about the characters and their individual characteristics. Our discussion document starts out with brief character analysis so we thought about flavors and textures that reminded us of our favorite characters. For example, Talia seems a bit rough around the edges but oh my she is so sweet and compassionate. That reminds me of salted caramel. Lucy? Well, how about some Red Hots or Hot Tamales candy? Are you getting the idea? So, when you have your own book club and are looking for ice cream mix-ins, allow your personal feelings for the characters inspire your choices!
Here are a few more of our choices:
Pretzels - salty and crunchy, ridged yet necessary for balance
Magic Shell - hard, outer shell but so sweet when cracked
Toffee - Unique flavor, crunchy yet tender
Chocolate chips - sweet, comforting
Marshmallow fluff - gooey, sweet
Herbs (thyme, basil, etc.) - bright, unique flavors, earthy
*Gemma advises to put the sweetened condensed milk in the freezer for four hours or over night. That is what I do!
